Baby Steps

Before we dip our toes into the foreign waters of blogging, let’s figure out how we got here.

Picture a young boy growing up in the Bay Area, a town riddled with some of the most famous sports franchises in history, which housed the likes of iconic figures such as Joe Montana, Willie Mays, and Stephen Curry. Naturally, this young boy fell in love with the aura and culture of sport, even partaking in some as a youth with hopes of making it big. That dream quickly met its demise as the years past, but that boy turned young teenager never relinquished his infatuation with his favorite pastimes even though he stunk at playing them. Instead, he found solace through the power of writing; the manipulation of words to express oneself, to romanticize or scrutinize, or even a simple email to your boss about your random “food poisoning” incident the same day as the big game fascinated him. So, when the time came for that young teen to decide on a future, to become a man, he chose to pursue a career in writing, hopefully someday for a sports column or website, and what better place to start than with a blog (for various reasons)!

For starters, a sports blog never fails to attract fellow fans, whether it be specific to that blogger’s favorite team and/or sport. And what indeed makes sports so special are its fans. Every fan thinks they know what’s best for the team: “Trade this guy!”, “We need a new coach!”, “This guy is a future star!” Whatever their opinions are (and believe me, sports fans are never short on any and all kinds of opinions), fans are always interested in finding other fans with either the same theories to back theirs up, similar theories to draw from to formulate their own, or one’s to ridicule and totally counter against. These forms of debate and criticism are a staple of fandom, and I hope to create and inspire more discussion like the one’s seen on television not only to further the popularity of sport, but to keep it thriving.

Another reason to blog about sports is I’ve accumulated a pretty fair understanding of them, particularly baseball and basketball, which we’ll mainly be focusing on here. In life, it’s never a bad bet to go with what you know, and go with it honestly. I’d hate to see what some of your stomachs would become if I attempted a blog of recipes, so I’ll stick to the ball games with as little bias as possible, because nobody loves a homer.

Finally, sports is my passion, through and through. Sports has seen me past some of my worst moments, and some of my best. Whatever turn life takes, it’s amazing how sport has either reflected that same energy or somehow dictated it. Sport is beyond entertainment; sport has power, just as words do. It influences and captivates its audience, while also illustrating some of the many emotions of the grand scheme of the human experience: pure joy, bitter anger, gut-wrenching frustration, prolonged agony, utter heartbreak, and euphoric triumph.

In a way, sport and writing have a lot more in common than you might think.

But what do I know, I’m just a guy with a computer and vault full of opinions.
