A Giant Add: SF Snags Bryant

Currently watching Giants-Diamondbacks on this Monday night; 2-0 good guys, bottom 3. Yaz just hit one into next year.

Shortly after the homer, Kris Bryant dove into 1st to leg out an infield single. It both made me hold my breath in fear of his hand, and reiterate just how special the guy the Giants just traded for is.

The deadline flirted Giants fans with potential Max Scherzer dreams, among others. The biggest get for me would have (and still might be by a hair) been Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel. Moving the Jake McGee/Tyler Rogers combo up an inning to shorten the game, then have Kimbrel to blow teams away in the 9th, would’ve been a deadly combination.

However, Farhan Zaidi and friends instead grabbed what perhaps is the most prototypical, perfect fit for this Giants roster, utility All-Star Kris Bryant. Let’s drool over him, shall we?

First and foremost, the Giants got Bryant for very, VERY little, sending outfielder Alexander Canario and pitcher Caleb Kilian to Chicago in exchange for him, two promising, yet no where near ready prospects. Meaning, in the likely event Bryant departs after this short stint, the burn won’t sting like that of the Carlos Beltran or Andrew McCutchen experiments. (Beltran was let down by the rest of the 2010 hangover/ Posey-less Giants, and the Cutch walk-off against LA is the best game I’ve ever attended, to date, in their respective defenses.)

Next, Kris is arguably the perfect star to add to this current roster. Completely simplified, Bryant is the every day big right-handed stick the Giants need alongside Buster Posey, especially with Evan Longoria still sidelined indefinitely. He fits the modern-day utility mold, meaning the Giants can keep his bat in the lineup no matter who else they want to throw in on a given day, as he can man all three outfield spots and the corner infield positions.

Hell, he’s even gotten run at second base.

On top of that, Bryant plays exceptional defense at all of those spots, instead of other versatile guys who play one or two well, and passably at the rest.

The former MVP has also got the homely Giants background, similar to that the likes of Brandon Crawford, as he grew up a Giants fan, more concretely a massive Barry Bonds fan. So he’s already earned some brownie points with the fanbase that would’ve adored him either way.

Lastly, his humble demeanor, team-first attitude, and high baseball-IQ fit perfectly with this mix-and-match, gritty San Francisco club.

All this was in theory when the trade went down, and during the initial interviews with Kris before his first game.

Then the guy made us all fan-girl out, going deep to put the Giants on the board Sunday afternoon, and ultimately sparked the team to eventually win that game, and series, against The Cheaters.

So if it isn’t perfectly clear, I’ll confirm it: I am fucking ecstatic that the Giants got this guy.

I’ve had my beef with the likes of the Cubbies like Bryant, Baez, and Rizzo being a bit more cocky than I’d like them to be off of one championship that was largely due to the futility of Cleveland sports rather than them outperforming the Indians. I can’t speak for the other two, but just two games in, I couldn’t have been more wrong about Bryant.

He delivers in his first game with a home run, and just today dives head first to nab a 2-out infield hit to show his new club he’s all in.

So again, I’m more than pleased thus far. Plus, it’s exciting to not only see Farhan’s first big fish landed in his tenure, with hopefully much more to come this offseason, but it’s also always cool when a longtime star changes teams. I think my only negative in the insanely brief Kris Bryant-San Francisco Giants experience is that he didn’t make in time to play Saturday when I was there, which wasn’t even is fault.

He just battled for a walk here top 5. Already grinding like the rest of them. God, someone come fan me.

The NL West race is going to be chaotic as all hell, and a shit-load of fun every step of the way. Can’t wait for Bryant to go against Mad Max in September.

Let’s get Gausman back to form, Dickerson off the team if he can’t figure it out by the time Belt gets back, and start convincing Bryant to stay. And ain’t no better way to do that than to go deep in the playoffs.

Lakers post coming soon, as there was a trade you may or may not have heard about. On top of that, the Lakers literally grabbed every single aged-former Laker for the bench brigade on vet minimums. I’ll let the dust settle then type up a long one for you.

And I would be remiss if I did not give my absolute MAN, POTS AND PANS, Mike Tauchman some love for clearing waivers and coming back to me, even if it is as depth in the minors. I just love that guy man, and if this teams somehow rides this wave to what HAS to be the most overachieving season ever, Tauchy better get shown some love by someone other than me.

Go Giants, baby.

Cheers.
